Primer of Sri Ganesh

Lord Ganesh, the elder son of Lord Shiv, the God of Knowledge be,

Also called Vinayak or Vighneshwer removes obstacles graciously,

He is revertly worshipped at the start of any auspicious ceremony,

For blessings, eliminating difficulties, good fortunate - with sincereity.

He has four hands, an elephant's head and a big loving pot belly,

In his hands he has a rope to carry to the truth all his devotees,

An axe to cut attachments, a laddoo to reward for spiritual activity,

His fourth hand's palm is extended to bless his sincere devotees.

His elephant-like head and quick moving mouse his vehicle tiny,

Represents awesome wisdom, intellegence, presence of mind fully,

The principal known scriptures dedicated to Lord Ganesh surely,

The Ganesh Puran, Mudgala Puran and Ganapati Atharvashirsa be.

Obstical Remover Ganapati Stotram by Narada

संकटनाशनं श्री गणेशस्तोत्रम्

The Sankata Nasana Ganesh or Ganapati Stotra (from Narada Puran - one of the major eighteen Hindu Purans) contains devotion and worship in the form of a dialogue between Narada and Sanat. It helps wipe out sorrows and impending dangers, clean ones `karma’ and enable good vibration around. Its fruits are visible quickly - if recited with a pure heart, love, compassion and devotion to Ganesh.

॥नारद उवाच॥

प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं गौरीपुत्रं विनायकम् l

भक्तावासं स्मरेन्नित्यामायु: कामार्थ सिध्ध्ये॥

Sage Narada said:

The one who desires for more life, wealth and love truly,

Should bow to Lord Ganesh, Ma Parvati’s son, reverently.

प्रथमं वक्रतुण्डं च एकदन्तं द्वितीयकम् l

तृतीयं कृष्णपिंगाक्षं गजवकत्रं चतुर्थकम्॥

Pray him first as God with a trunk and then with one tusk secondly,

Thirdly with reddish black eyes and with an elephant face fourthly.

लंबोदरं पंचमं च षष्ठं विकटमेव च l

सप्तमं विन्धराजं च धूम्रवर्ण तथाSष्टमम्॥

Fifth as one with a long belly and as the slayer of enemies sixthly,

Seventh remover of obstacles and one with the ash colour eighthly.

नवमम् भालचन्द्रम् दशमं तु विनायकम् l

ऐकादशं गणपति द्वादशं तु गजाननम्॥

Ninth with a crescent moon on forehead and obstacles remover tenthly,

Eleventh as the leader of Shiv's army and elephant faced twelfthly.

द्वादशैतानि नामानि त्रिसंध्यं य: पठेन्नर: l

न च विघ्नभयं तस्य सर्वसिद्धिकरं परम्॥

One who reads these twelve names three times a day will certainly,

Never have fear of mishaps and God will fulfill all his desires totally.

विद्यार्थी लभते विद्यां धनार्थी लभते धनम् l

पुत्रार्थी लभते पुत्रान् मोक्षार्थी लभते गतिम्॥

A learner will get total knowledge and an earner get ample money,

Wanting a child will get fulfilled and desirous of salvation get liberty.

जपेद्द गणपतिस्तोत्रं षड्भिर्मासै: फलम् लभते l

संवत्सरेण सिद्धिं च लभते नात्र संशय॥

Who regularly chants this stotra will get best results quickly,

Within a year all his ambitions will become content undoubtedly.

अष्टानां ब्राह्मणानां च लिखित्वा य: समर्पयेत् l

तस्यविद्या भवेत्सर्वा गणेशस्यप्रसादत॥

Who has this written by Eight Brahmans - offers it to Ganesh keenly,

Will become very scholarly and be blessed by Ganesh definitely.

श्री गणेश पन्चरत्न स्तोत्र

The Ganesh Pancha Ratnam Stotram was composed by Adi Shankaracharya the great saint and philosopher of the 8th Century AD and dedicated towards Lord Ganesh - the God of all beginnings, knowledge, wisdom and all things auspicious in life, the remover of sorrows and dangers.

श्री गणेशाय नमः

मुदाकरात्त मोदकं सदा विमुक्तिसाधकम् l कलाधरावतंसकं विलासि लोकरक्षकम् ll

अनायकैक नायकं विनाशितेभदैत्यकम् l नताशुभाशुनाशकं नमामि तं विनायकम् ll

I salute the Remover of obstacles with modakas in his hands in reality,

Who bestows salvation and wears a crescent moon on his head actually,

Who protects this varied world and leads those who can’t be lead truly,

Who causes asuras destruction and destroys all things not good surely.

नतेतरातिभीकरं नवोदितार्कभास्वरम् l नमत्सुरारि निर्जरं नताधिकापदुद्धरम् ll

सुरेश्वरं निधीश्वरं गजेश्वरं गणेश्वरं l महेश्वरं तमाश्रये परात्परं निरन्तरम् ll

I bow before Lord permanently who creates fear in his devotees enemies,

Who sparkles as the dawn Sun and saluted by Gods and Asuras respectedly,

Who is God of all devas and wealth and destroys obstacles of his devotees,

Who is the deity of all the elephants and is the leader of Lord Shiv’s army.

समस्त लोकसंकरं निरस्तदैत्यकुंजरम् l दरेतरोदरं वरं वरेभवक्त्रमक्षरम् ll

कृपाकरं क्षमाकरं मुदाकरं यशस्करम् l मनस्करं नमस्कृतां नमस्करोमि भास्वरम् ll

I bow to Ganapati who shines like the Sun and bestows peace worldly,

Who removed Gajamukhasur and has a very big paunch lovingly,

Who has an elephant-face which blesses and shows sympathy,

Who tolerates and showers fame to those who are his devotees.

अकिंचनार्तिमार्जनं चिरन्तनोक्ति भाजनम् l पुरारिपूर्व नन्दनं सुरारि गर्वचर्वणम् ll

प्रपंच नाशभीषणं धनंजयादि भूषणम् l कपोलदानवारणं भजे पुराणवारणम् ll

I salute the ancient elephant-god who destroys wants of have nots fully,

Is worshipped since ancient times and is the eldest son of Shiv and Parvati,

Who is awesome at the final deluge and eats away pride of gods’ enemies,

Who ornaments snakes as Dananjay and is fierce as rut elephant majestically.

नितान्तकान्तदन्तकान्ति मन्तकान्तकात्मजम् l अचिन्त्य रुपमन्तहीन मन्तरायकृन्तनम् ll

ह्रदन्तरे निरन्तरं वसन्तमेव योगिनाम् l तमेकदन्तमेव तं विचिन्तयामि सन्ततम् ll

I meditate on Him with single tusk whose ever lustrous tusk is very pretty,

Whose form is beyond mind's eye, is son of Lord who killed god of death truly,

Who is eternal and endless and who removes all obstacles indisputably,

Who dwells forever in heart of yogis like the blissful spring affectionately.

फलश्रुती

Resultant

महागणेश पंचरत्नम् आदरेण योन्वहम् l

प्रजल्पति प्रभातके ह्रदि स्मरन् गणेश्वरम् ll

He who remembers every morning these five gems of Lord Ganapati,

Who meditates the Leader of ganas will be blessed with a life healthy,

Liberated of all problems and endowed with peace, sons and longevity,

With spiritual and physical wealth - walking the path of humanity.

वक्रतुंड महाकाय कोटिसूर्यसमप्रभ।

निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥

“Lord Ganesh of curved elephant trunk and huge body,

Whose brilliance is equal to billions of suns in intensity,

Always removes all obstacles from my endeavours truly,

I respectfully pray to him with all my revered sincerity.”

गजाननं भूतगणादिसेवितं कपित्थजंबूफलचारुभक्षणम्‌।

उमासुतं शोकविनाशकारकं नमामि विघ्नेश्वरपादपङ्कजम्‌॥

“Elephant headed Ganesh with his band of followers be,

Who eats his wood-apple and rose-apple fruits lovingly,

Who is Goddess Uma’s son and sorrow’s destruction surely,

And I salute to his feet which are like a blooming lotus truly.”

सुमुखश्चैकदंतश्च कपिलो गजकर्णकः।

लम्बोदरश्च विकटो विघ्ननाशो गणाधिपः॥

धूम्रकेतुर्गणाध्यक्षो भालचन्द्रो गजाननः।

द्वादशैतानि नामानि यः पठेच्छृणुयादपि॥

विद्यारंभे विवाहे च प्रवेशे निर्गमे तथा।

संग्रामे संकटे चैव विघ्नस्तस्य न जायते॥

Who read or listen to these twelve names of Ganesh lovingly,

No obstacles will come at the beginning of education surely,

Nor at time of marriage, nor entering or exiting anything justly,

Ever triumphant during a battle or calamity succeeding easily.

शुक्लाम्बरधरं देवं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम्।

प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये॥

“To remove all obstacles in any or every walk of life simply,

One should meditate on Lord Ganesh ever affectionately,

Wearing a white garment, having moon like complexion certainly,

Having four arms and a pleasant countenance about him surely.”

मूषिकवाहन् मोदकहस्त चामरकर्ण विलम्बित सूत्र।

वामनरूप महेश्वरपुत्र विघ्नविनायक पाद नमस्ते॥

“Ganesh’s vehicle is mouse and in his hand sweet rice ball fondly,

His ears as wide fans, with sacred thread on his shoulders warmly,

He Shiv’s son who is short statured and removes all obstacles fully,

To Vinayaka, in reverence I bow at your feet with all my sincerity.”

जय जय जय वंदन भुवन, नंदन गौरिगणेश ।

दुख द्वंद्वन फंदन हरन,सुंदर सुवन महेश ॥

O Ganesh! Glory – to you the whole world is paying,

You the delight of Gauri and Shiva – their son charming,

You – the destroyer of all problems accumulating,

You – to everybody be happiness ever conferring.

जयति शंभु सुत गौरी नंदन । विघ्न हरन नासन भव फंदन ॥

जय गणनायक जनसुख दायक । विश्व विनायक बुद्धि विधायक ॥

Glory to you – O son of Shambhu and delight of Gauri be,

Demolisher of all fears and deliverer from rebirth truly,

Shiva's henchmen leader, happiness provider to devotees,

Destroyer of ignorance and giver of knowledge universally!

एक रदन गज बदन विराजत । वक्रतुंड शुचि शुंड सुसाजत ॥

तिलक त्रिपुण्ड भाल शशि सोहत । छबि लखि सुर नर मुनि मन मोहत ॥

The single tusk adorned on your sacred trunk dazzling fully,

Crescent-shaped triple mark on your forehead adorable be,

The celestials, men and ascetics who behold you clearly,

Be engulfed in your loveliness forever in blissful eternity.

उर मणिमाल सरोरुह लोचन । रत्न मुकुट सिर सोच विमोचन ॥

कर कुठार शुचि सुभग त्रिशूलम् । मोदक भोग सुगंधित फूलम् ॥

You adore jewels garland, your eyes a full-blown lotus beauty,

On your head crown of gems, freeing devotees from anxiety,

Holding a sacred axe, a striking trident in your hands clearly,

Fragrant blossom flowers and sweet `laddus’ your delicacies.

सुंदर पीताम्बर तन साजित । चरण पादुका मुनि मन राजित ॥

धनि शिव सुवन भुवन सुख दाता । गौरी ललन षडानन भ्राता ॥

O Kaartikeya's brother - beloved son of Shiva and Gauri,

Attired in your beautiful yellow silken dress so elegantly,

Wearing wooden sandals studded with gems beautifully,

You are the source of the blessings of the world totally.

ॠद्धि सिद्धि तव चंवर सुढारहिं । मूषक वाहन सोहित द्वारहिं ॥

तव महिमा को बरनै पारा । जन्म चरित्र विचित्र तुम्हारा ॥

Over you wave royal chowries accomplishment and prosperity,

Your vehicle, the mouse, adds to your splendor and glory,

And the story of your life is so strange filled with mystery,

Who can describe your magnificence, which passes all stories?

एक असुर शिवरुप बनावै । गौरिहिं छलन हेतु तह आवै ॥

एहि कारण ते श्री शिव प्यारी । निज तन मैल मूर्ति रचि डारि ॥

A demon disguised as Shiva tried repeatedly,

To delude Gauri who in order to foil his folly,

Moulded you as her own son with all glory,

A divine form from the very scurf of her body.

सो निज सुत करि गृह रखवारे । द्धारपाल सम तेहिं बैठारे ॥

जबहिं स्वयं श्री शिव तहं आए । बिनु पहिचान जान नहिं पाए ॥

Gauri assigned you to guard her home – your duty,

Stationed you at the very entrance for her security,

When Shiv, her husband, approached unknowingly,

He being unrecognized was not allowed any entry.

पूछ्यो शिव हो किनके लाला । बोलत भे तुम वचन रसाला ॥

मैं हूं गौरी सुत सुनि लीजै । आगे पग न भवन हित दीजै ॥

Shiv asked, "Whose son are you?" softly,

And you even replied then so pleasantly,

"I am the son of Gauri do hear undoubtedly,

And do not step towards the house" firmly.

आवहिं मातु बूझि तब जाओ । बालक से जनि बात बढ़ाओ ॥

चलन चह्यो शिव बचन न मान्यो । तब ह्वै क्रुद्ध युद्ध तुम ठान्यो ॥

You asked Shiv to wait for your mother's consent clearly,

Shiv avoiding to prolong talk with a child undoubtedly,

Attempted to enter – ignoring your words unmindfully,

And you then challenged him to war determinedly.

तत्क्षण नहिं कछु शंभु बिचारयो । गहि त्रिशूल भूल वश मारयो ॥

शिरिष फूल सम सिर कटि गयउ । छट उड़ि लोप गगन महं भयउ ॥

At that moment Shiv without thought plainly,

Hurled his trishul (Trident) hitting you squarely,

Severing your head from your body immediately,

Which soared into the sky and disappeared fully.

गयो शंभु जब भवन मंझारी । जहं बैठी गिरिराज कुमारी ॥

पूछे शिव निज मन मुसकाये । कहहु सती सुत कहं ते जाये ॥

And then Shiv entered the house unheedingly,

Wherein sat the daughter of Himalaya - Gauri,

Shiv inquired from her - within but smilingly,

"Hey Sati how you give birth to your son?" openly.

खुलिगे भेद कथा सुनि सारी । गिरी विकल गिरिराज दुलारी ॥

कियो न भल स्वामी अब जाओ । लाओ शीष जहां से पाओ ॥

The legend of your birth unfolded with her story,

And Gauri fell to the ground learning your tragedy,

"You did not do good – My Lord go sincerely,

Bring his head wherever you find it eventually."

चल्यो विष्णु संग शिव विज्ञानी । मिल्यो न सो हस्तिहिं सिर आनी ॥

धड़ ऊपर स्थित कर दीन्ह्यो । प्राण वायु संचालन कीन्ह्यो ॥

Shiv accompanied by Vishnu searched hopefully,

Could not find your head - tried unsuccessfully,

Brought back a baby elephant’s head eventually,

Placed it on your body, gave you life and immortality.

श्री गणेश तब नाम धरायो । विद्या बुद्धि अमर वर पायो ॥

भे प्रभु प्रथम पूज्य सुखदायक । विघ्न विनाशक बुद्धि विधायक ॥

Then you were thus named Shri Ganesh appropriately,

Blessed with knowledge, wisdom and immortality,

Shiv pronounced - you will be worshipped first eternally,

Removing all obstacles, bring joy, intellect unmistakably.

प्रथमहिं नाम लेत तव जोई । जग कहं सकल काज सिध होई ॥

सुमिरहिं तुमहिं मिलहिं सुख नाना । बिनु तव कृपा न कहुं कल्याना ॥

Name of Shri Ganeshji if remembered initially,

Embarking on any mission concludes successfully,

Who meditate on you get happiness, peace and security,

Without your blessing there be no success finally.

तुम्हरहिं शाप भयो जग अंकित । भादौं चौथ चंद्र अकलंकित ॥

जबहिं परीक्षा शिव तुहिं लीन्हा । प्रदक्षिणा पृथ्वी कहि दीन्हा ॥

Your curse caused the universe to be effected wholly,

With earth’s reflection on moon on 4th day of Bhado truly,

When Shivji wanted to assess your intelligence justly,

He asked you to circumambulate the earth speedily.

षड्मुख चल्यो मयूर उड़ाई । बैठि रचे तुम सहज उपाई ॥

राम नाम महि पर लिखि अंका । कीन्ह प्रदक्षिण तजि मन शंका ॥

Your brother, Kartikeya, flew on his peacock to beat you quickly,

You sat relaxed and took out a simple solution intelligently,

Writing Rama's name on the ground meditating truthfully,

You went around the name written on the ground completely.

श्री पितु मातु चरण धरि लीन्ह्यो । ता कहं सात प्रदक्षिण कीन्ह्यो ॥

पृथ्वी परिक्रमा फल पायो । अस लखि सुरन सुमन बरसायो ॥

You with utmost devotion grasped your parent’s feet reverently,

And circumambulated them seven times affectionately,

Thus achieved blessings equal to the task given essentially,

Pleased were gods - showered flowers on you delightedly.

'सुंदरदास' राम के चेरा । दुर्वासा आश्रम धरि डेरा ॥

विरच्यो श्रीगणेश चालीसा । शिव पुराण वर्णित योगीशा ॥

Sundardaas while staying in Durvasa’s hermitage holy,

Being also a dedicated and sincere Rama’s devotee,

Composed this Sri Ganesh Chalisa ever so lovingly,

Just as the Rishi composed Shiva Purana – so aptly.

नित्य गजानन जो गुण गावत । गृह बसि सुमति परम सुख पावत ॥

जन धन धान्य सुवन सुखदायक । देहिं सकल शुभ श्री गणनायक ॥

The wise persons who hymn the glory of Ganesh daily,

Be blessed with intelligence and supreme bliss joyfully,

And Sri Ganesh ever blesses all his faithful devotees,

With wealth, happiness, auspicious objects and progeny.

Doha

श्री गणेश यह चालिसा,पाठ करै धरि ध्यान ।

नित नव मंगल मोद लहि,मिलै जगत सम्मान ॥

द्धै सहस्त्र दस विक्रमी, भाद्र कृष्ण तिथि गंग ।

पूरन चालीसा भयो, सुंदर भक्ति अभंग ॥

Who repeats this hymn with earnestness has His blessings,

With all felicity, novelty and honour he be ever then growing,

`Munindra’ – His pupil with honesty ever earnestly be striving,

To sip the sublime glory of “Ganapataye’s” bliss – unrelenting.

माथे पर तिलक सोहे मूसे की सवारी।

पान चढ़े फल चढ़े और चढ़े मेवा,

लड्डुअन का भोग लगे सन्त करें सेवा॥

अंधे को आँख देत कोढ़िन को काया,

बाँझन को पुत्र देत निर्धन को माया।

'सूर' श्याम शरण आए सफल कीजे सेवा,
